City home in on title

Manchester City Took full advantage of their games in hand and a Liverpool slip up to win the Premier League title for the second time in 3 years. After losing 3-2 at Liverpool and drawing 2-2 at home to Sunderland, City won 5 matches in a row including a 3-2 away to Everton, which gave them a clear path to the title.

Liverpool began to dream of the title but after a 2-0 slip up at home to Chelsea, they allowed a 3 goal lead at Crystal Palace to turn into a draw in an 11 minute spell with a Dwight Gayle brace blowing their hopes away.

Chelsea suffered a huge setback losing 1-0 at Crystal Palace and when they lost 2-1 at home to Sunderland their failure to win the league title was virtually confirmed.

Arsenal won their last 5 matches after being swept aside 3-0 at Everton and once again finished fourth.

Everton lost the race to fourth spot after losing 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace and Manchester City and a 2-0 defeat at Southampton.

Tottenham had a mixed bag, hammering Sunderland 5-1 at the Lane after being swept away 4-0 at Liverpool and then came from 3 down to draw at West Brom but lost 2-0 at West Ham who did the double over their London rivals.

Manchester United Who were beaten 2-0 at Everton put Ryan Giggs in charge for the last 4 matches after dismissing David Moyes and after an uplifting 4-0 win at home to Norwich suffered a 1-0 home loss to Sunderland and finished the season with a 1-1 draw at Southampton.

Southampton put 4 past Newcastle at St Mary's before losing 4-1 at Manchester City and suffering a 1-0 shock defeat at home to Cardiff City and playing a goalless match at Aston Villa. The Saints ended the season with wins over Everton and Swansea and a home draw against Manchester United.

Stoke City finished in 9th place after ending the season with 2 straight wins thumping Fulham 4-1 at the Britannia Stadium and beating West Brom 2-1 away from home.

Newcastle United went on a run of defeats only picking up points in their 3-0 home win over bottom-of-the-table Cardiff, but still managed to finish mid-table.

Crystal Palace who were at one stage in serious danger of relegation began to race towards the middle of the table with 1-0 wins at home to Chelsea and Aston Villa and away to West Ham and also upset Everton 3-2 at Goodison Park.

Swansea City  stayed clear of the relegation zone by picking up important wins including a 4-1 victory at home to Aston Villa and a 3-1 triumph at Sunderland that took them above West Ham.

West Ham United enjoyed the occasional 3-pointers such as their 2-1 victory at Sunderland and 2-0 home win over Tottenham to stay in the safe zone.

Sunderland who at one stage seemed to be in need of a miracle to avoid relegation, achieved their goal by drawing 2-2 at eventual champions Manchester City and wining 2-1 at Chelsea and 1-0 at Manchester United.

Aston Villa came dangerously close to relegation only picking up points in a goalless draw at home to Southampton and a 3-1 home win over Hull City in their run towards the end of the season.

Hull City won their vital home match against Swansea by a single goal and shared 4 goals with their hosts at Fulham to stay in the Premier League.

West Bromwich Albion only just avoided relegation thanks to 3-3 draw against Tottenham and 1-0 victory over West Ham at the Hawthorns.

Norwich City were doomed after losing 3-0 at Swansea and 1-0 at home to West Brom and away to Fulham as they had a tough fixture list remaining where they only picked up a point in a goalless draw at Chelsea.

Fulham were also relegated despite putting up a late fight winning 2-1 at Aston Villa and 1-0 at home to Norwich as they dropped points in a 2-2 home draw against Hull and were soundly beaten 4-1 at Stoke.

Cardiff City finished bottom of the league losing their last 3 matches after a 1-0 shock win at Southampton and 1-1 draw at home to Stoke City.
